Why were wrestling fans crying when they heard Benoit died?

Or any wrestlers for that matter. My coworker asked me this. She said she couldn't understand how so many people felt a personal connection when they never met the man. Her comment was "these people need to get a life and a real relationship".....was she wrong? (Note: This was before the news of the murder/suicide came out)
